Microsoft Says China-Backed Hacker Targeted "Critical Infrastructure" In US

Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it had detected malicious activity conducted by a state-sponsored group originating from China. The primary targets of this activity were critical infrastructure organizations located in Guam and the United States. Microsoft's assessment indicates a "moderate confidence" that the campaign known as Volt Typhoon is actively working towards developing capabilities that could potentially disrupt the vital communications infrastructure connecting the United States with the Asian region during future crises.

The Volt Typhoon campaign has been operational since mid-2021 and has specifically focused on critical infrastructure organizations situated in Guam and other parts of the United States. It is worth noting that Guam houses significant military installations, such as the Andersen Air Force Base, which plays a crucial role in the potential response to any conflict in the Asia-Pacific area.

Microsoft promptly informed the affected customers or those who fell victim to the attacks, ensuring they received the necessary information to address the issue.

As of now, the Chinese embassy in Washington has not responded to a Reuters request for comment regarding these allegations.
